Faculty
Adjunct faculty members of the College are sought out
not only with consideration of their academic backgrounds,
but also for significant real-world ministry experience.
SBC's goal is to utilize and affirm instructors with
an ability to motivate the student-learner, communicate
effectively, and inter-act with students on a personal
and significant level. Recent additions to the teaching
team have broadened and enriched the school's capabilities
in effectively modeling, mentoring and imparting practical
truths to the next generation of servant-leaders.
Ned Collingridge
H.E. (Ned) Collingridge began his fruitful ministry
at Seattle Bible Training School (now SBC) early in
1960, resigning as Dean in 1968 to return to the foreign
mission field. Ned's ministry background had already
included nine years of pastoring and five years of missionary
work. Following his minis-try at our school, Ned and
Virginia spent 24 years in Uruguay, then moved to Equatorial
Guinea to help their son Richard (class of '67) with
Bible school work there. Ned also invested significant
time in Cameroon teaching the Bible. Headquartered now
in the Seattle area, Ned makes himself available for
training yet another generation of "world-changers."
Ned's formal education includes a B.A. from George Pepperdine
University and an M.Div. from Grace Theological Seminary.
Ned and Virginia are parents to six grown children.
Paul Cornish
Paul Cornish came to Seattle Bible Training School (now
SBC) in 1970 and served as Dean as well as the major
theology instructor for 22 years. He re-signed from
this position in 1992 and entered overseas ministry.
Prior to serving in Seattle, he ministered in Canada
for more than 25 years, serving in pastoral work as
well as principal of Temple Bible Institute (later known
as Temple Bible College) in Alberta, Canada. More recently,
Paul has served on staff at Philadelphia Church as Senior
Associate Pastor and now is Associate Pastor at Hope
Christian Fellowship in Burien, Wash. He is a graduate
of Northwest Bible College in Edmonton, Alberta. Paul
and his late wife, Bodil (former SBC librarian), raised
four children.
Jack DeBay
Jack brings to SBC a wealth of teaching and pastoral
experience, having served with Open Bible, Foursquare
and Assemblies of God ministries. His service included
pastoral work in three states, eight years as Dean of
Men and professor at Eugene Bible College, as well as
teaching in Hong Kong and in Mainland China. Jack's
formal education includes a B.A. in Education from Florida
Southern College, Lakeland, FL, an M.A. in Theology
and a M.Div. from Florida Beacon College & Seminary,
Largo, FL. Jack's written work includes a New Testament
commentary that he has utilized in his Bible teaching.
Jack is married to Shirl, and they have seven children.
Shirl DeBay
With a passion for missions work in Asia and the ministry
of counseling in the U.S., Shirl came to SBC with a
rich background in both academics and hands-on Christian
service. Before nine years of missionary work in Japan,
Shirl graduated from Northwest College, Kirkland, WA,
with a Diploma in Bible and Foreign Missions. Later
Shirl earned a B.A. in Psychology and a M.A. in Counseling
from Seattle Pacific University. In addition to other
educational pursuits, Shirl holds a Doctor of Humanities
Degree from Florida Beacon College and Seminary, Largo,
FL. Shirl was involved as a private practice marriage
and family counselor for 32 years. She has also served
as Dean of Women and a professor in both Eugene Bible
College and Florida Beacon College and Seminary. Shirl
has also served as a professor in schools in Hong Kong,
Kowloon and Shenyang, China. Shirl is married to Jack,
and they have 7 adult children.
Bernie Ferrell
Bernie became Senior Pastor of Living Hope Church, Lynnwood,
WA in 1998 after ten years of previous experience in
church staff ministry. In addition to serving as a teacher
at SBC from 1978-1983, Bernie has taught junior high
at a local Christian school, served seven years in volunteer
ministry with Campus Crusade's Family Life Conference,
and was director and counselor at Oasis Counseling Center
in Mukilteo, WA from 1992 - 1996. Bernie holds a B.Th.
degree from Seattle Bible College, and a B.A. in Pastoral
Ministries and in Behavioral Science from Northwest
College, Kirkland, WA. Bernie also has done considerable
graduate work in the counseling field. Bernie and his
wife Sylvia are parents to three adult children. Sylvia
(class of '94) serves with Bernie at SBC as a team-teacher.
Warren Heckman
Warren has served in leadership ministry since 1958.
Warren's pastorates have included Minden, Neb., Fosston,
Minn., concluding with thirty years in Madison, WI.,
where the church grew from a handful of people to a
"mega church." During those years in Madison, several
churches were planted and more than 100 people went
into a variety of full-time ministries. Warren earned
his B.S. degree from Southwestern Assemblies of God
University, an M.Min. from Olivet Nazarene University,
and a D.Min. from Oral Roberts University. For three
years Warren served as Dean of Southern California Christian
College, and as an associate pastor at Victory Christian
Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., This summer Warren
joined the pastoral staff of All Nations Community Church,
Homewood, Ill., and also serves as U.S. Coordinator
for the Fellowship of Christian Assemblies.
Keith Hook
With more than 30 years of experience in pastoral ministry
and missions, Keith has been teaching at Seattle Bible
College since the 1991-'92 school year. He and his wife,
Judy, were married in 1973, and have three daughters,
one of whom is married and serving on the mission field
in SE Asia. Keith and Judy's missions work involved
residential ministry in Hong Kong and now centers around
mission mobilization here in the States as advocates
for the Muslim peoples of SE Asia. They are affiliated
with Mission to Unreached Peoples in Seattle. Keith
has a B.A. from Macalester College, and a M.Div. from
Dubuque Theological Seminary with time also spent at
the Faculty of Divinity in Edinburgh, Scot-land. Keith
has previously served as Associate Pastor at Sonrise
Chapel, has taught at Puget Sound Christian College,
and serves in missions leadership at Westgate Chapel
in Edmonds where he and Judy are members.
Anna Johnson
Anna began teaching at SBC in 1993 and now serves as
Dean of Women at the school in addition to working with
the Seattle Public Schools. Her educational background
includes Seattle Pacific University, as well as Seattle
Bible College where she earned a Bachelor of Biblical
Studies degree. Anna has served with her husband Bryan
in missionary work in Liberia, West Africa, and has
assisted him in staff and senior pastoral ministry in
the U.S. Anna has written and directed a number of seasonal
dramas, taught drama for some years at SBC, and enjoys
teaching women. Anna and Bryan have three sons.
Nathan Johnson
Nathan was raised in a minister's home, as the oldest
of three boys. He developed a passion for music through
numerous years of worship leading in various church
settings as well as being the lead singer for a local
band. While earning his A.A.S. degree at Shoreline Community
College, Nathan developed a deep interest in government.
He then graduated with a B.B.S. from Seattle Bible College,
and in 2005 earned an M.A. in Government from Regent
University, Virginia Beach, VA. Following his heart
for politics, Nathan has served in various capacities,
including the Washington Evangelicals for Responsible
Government, the King County Republican Party, and the
Evergreen Freedom Foundation. His most recent experience
involves working as a Field Coordinator for a U.S. Senate
candidate from Washington State. His focus at SBC is
in the area of religion and politics. In 2005, Nathan
married Cassie (SBC class of '06), and they now make
their home in Everett.
Damian Livermore
Damian came to the U.S. in 1983 with his wife, Lynne,
from his homeland of Australia. Damian's ministry development
included discipleship training with Youth With A Mission
and the Bachelor of Theology program at Seattle Bible
College where he earned a B.Th. degree. He traveled
in music outreach ministry for more than three years,
and has served as a youth pastor, worship leader and
choir director. Currently, Damian is Executive Pastor
at The Father's House Foursquare Church, Granite Falls,
WA. Damian and Lynne make their home in Arlington, WA
and have three children
Doug Martin
Doug serves SBC as Director of Studies and is an elder
and Associate Pastor at Sonrise Chapel, Everett, where
he has been on staff since 1994. Doug earned a B.A.
in Psychology and Biblical Studies from Seattle Pacific
University, and worked in the business world for 15
years in the mortgage and escrow field. His teaching
ministry has taken him to Latin America and to India.
Doug and his wife, Faith, live in Mountlake Terrace,
WA, and-have a son and a daughter.
Russell Nuss
After giving his life to Christ at Camp Berachah as
a teenager, Russ immediately began attending Park Ridge
Chapel, Bothell, WA. As time progressed he joined the
pastoral staff as Youth Director and later as Associate
Pastor. From 2000-2004 Russ served on the pastoral staff
at Church By the Side of the Road, Tukwila, WA, then
was asked to return to serve at Park Ridge Chapel. Russ
earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University
of Washing-ton, and an M.A. in General Theology from
Fuller Theological Seminary. Russ is now embarking on
a new venture-a church plant in Arlington, WA. Russ
and his wife Sandi (class of '89) have five children.
Jack Schenaker
Jack Schenaker began teaching at SBC in 1992, and brings
with him a rich background of leadership experience.
This experience includes serving as an elder at Sonrise
Chapel, Everett; short-term missionary work in Pakistan,
India, Sri Lanka and Uganda; Bible camp director for
the American Indian Fellowship, and pastor. Jack served
30 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a Colonel.
His formal education includes a B.S. in Zoology from
Washington State University, a B.Th. from Seattle Bible
College, and a M.Div. with a Cross-Cultural Studies
minor from Fuller Theological Seminary. Jack and his
wife Doris have one son and one daughter.
Scott Smith
Scott serves as Director of Student Life at SBC, and
has, over the past 25 years, served extensively in youth/young
adult and music ministries. Ministry has taken him overseas
to place such as Australia, India and Latin America
and Uganda, to the southern Midwestern U.S., and to
the Seattle metroplex. Scott, and his wife, LeAnn, were
both raised in ministers' homes. Scott's father, Sam
Smith, served for 27 years as a teacher/administrator
at SBC. The Smiths have four children, and serve their
home church, Sonrise Chapel in Everett, as College Pastors.
Guy Vallee
Guy is the founding pastor of Cascade Christian Center
in Mount Vernon, Washington, after having spent 15 years
in youth ministry in three states and in Alberta, Canada.
Guy earned an Associate of Arts degree in 1980 from
Skagit Valley College, then received his Bachelor of
Arts degree with a major in Biblical Literature from
Northwest College in 1986. Since then his education
pursuits have taken him to Regent College in Vancouver,
BC where he earned his Master of Christian Studies with
a major in Applied Theology in 1993. Guy, who first
taught at SBC in 1995, is currently pursuing a Th.M
from Regent and is the author of Quantum Leap, a book
relating to youth ministry. Married to Marla in 1977,
the Vallees have two sons.
Avril vanderMerwe
Born and raised in a pastor's home in South Africa,
Avril served as a teacher there for thirteen years.
She earned a B.A. from the University of South Africa
with a triple major in Education, Psychology and English,
in addition to minors in Criminology, Afrikaans and
Dutch. Avril also earned a Higher Education Diploma
from the same university. In addition to her other certificates,
Avril holds a GCE A Level certificate from the University
of London, in Religious Studies. Avril is a published
author and is pursuing a M.Th. degree while currently
involved in mentoring relationships as well as in discipleship
and pastoral care ministries at Westgate Chapel.
William James vanderMerwe
Bill is from South Africa where he was involved in Christian
ministry as a pastor and itinerant evangelist and teacher
over a period of more than 40 years. In addition to
his extensive Christian leadership experience, he is
a published author (including, The Golden Cup) and is
presently working on a number of other publications.
He holds a General Certificate of Education from the
University of London, Eng-land; a Preliminary BD Examination
from the University of London; a Licentiate in Theology
and a Licentiate in Theology Honors from the Baptist
Theological College in Johannesburg; and a Higher Diploma
for Educators of Adults from the University of the Witwatersrand
in Johannesburg. He is a PhD. Candidate in Theology
at Trinity UK (endorsed by Canterbury Christ Church
University). Bill currently serves at Westgate Chapel,
Edmonds, WA, as Senior Adult Ministries Pastor. Bill
and his wife, Lorraine, have four daughters.
Mareth Warren
Mareth comes to SBC with a wealth of experience including
extensive travel and ministry in 26 nations, teaching
at conferences, churches, missions organizations (including
YWAM) and Bible schools. Her formal education includes
the Links School of Business, Boise, ID, and the University
of Washington (B.A.). Following graduation at the U.W.,
Mareth invested two years with the Peace Corps in Micronesia
as an ESL teacher. Mareth served as the founding director
of All Nations School of Ministry, Snohomish, WA. from
1995-1998. For more than five years Mareth served as
an associate with George Otis,, Jr. at The Sentinel
Group, Lynnwood, WA. Mareth and her husband Don have
three adult children of their own in addition to having
been foster parents to fifteen children over the years.
Colin Wellard
Born in England and raised in South Africa, Colin has
ministered internationally for more than 30 years including
guest ministry at YWAM, Christ For the Nations, work
with Youth For Christ in England and pastoring both
in Canada and the U.S. Colin's educational experience
includes graduation from a B.C. provincial instruction
program in curriculum development at Vancouver Community
College as well as from Northwest Bible College in Edmonton,
Alberta. He has served seven years as an adjunct faculty
member at Pacific Life Bible College in Surrey, B.C.,
and currently pastors Pacific Bible Church in Ilwaco,
Wash., where he and his wife, Mary, reside.
Bill Whiddon
Bill came to SBC as a student in 1976 after already
serving as Assistant Director at Teen Challenge in Yigo,
Guam. After graduating in 1981 with a BTh., Bill returned
to Guam to serve as Associate Pastor at Yigo Assembly
of God. Following that ministry, Bill served as Senior
Pastor for six years at Plain-well Assembly of God,
Plainwell, MI. Since then, Bill has served in sales
and marketing, and has taught numerous Bible subjects
in the local church context including a student internship
program. Since 1995 Bill has owned a cellular phone
store called Advantage Communications. Bill and his
wife Claudia have five children.
William Wolfson
Bill Wolfson was raised in a conservative Jewish home
on the south side of Chicago. Bill came to Christ during
his senior year of college. He immediately abandoned
his plans to complete law school and began preparing
for the ministry. Bill was an associate pastor at Homewood
Full Gospel Church, Homewood, Ill. (now All Nations
Community Church) for eight years. Since 1989, he has
served as senior pastor of Church For All Nations in
Tacoma, Wash., which has experienced significant growth.
Bill's academic background includes a B.A. from DePaul
University in Chicago, an M.A. from Olivet Nazarene
University in Bourbonnais, Ill., and a D.Min. from Faith
Seminary in Tacoma, Wash. Bill is supported in ministry
by his Canadian-born wife, Marj. The Wolfsons have four
children.
Paul Zettersten
Paul Zettersten has been in full-time Christian ministry
for approximately 60 years, beginning in his native
land of Sweden, then in Los Angeles for 28 years. In
1977 he began to serve Philadelphia Church in Seattle
as senior pastor and Seattle Bible College as president.
Since retiring from the Philadelphia Church in 1996,
Pastor Zettersten has served in interim pulpit ministry
in the Northwest as well as a guest preacher internationally.
His formal education includes college work in Sweden,
a B.A. from California State University, Los Angeles,
as well as the completion of all of the course work
for an M.A. in Communication from California State.
Paul and his wife May have two daughters.
